Tweet Interview

Tweet hit the scene a few years ago with her debut album Southern Hummingbird. The album was considered to be a modern classic among the fans who treasured the set. Tweet's debut was different than anything the industry had heard in awhile. The album spawned two hit singles, "Oops Oh My," and "Call Me." "Call Me" was featured as part of a Verizon campaign and in a Verizon commercial. While many artists are back right away with a sophmore album, Tweet took several years in between albums. Tweet is now back with It's Me Again. The debut single from the album, "Turn Da Lights Off" features Tweet's mentor Missy Elliott and was produced by Kwame. The album has been getting rave reviews from critics and fans.

Tweet and I spoke the day after her album was released. Our interview started a little bit late and from the chatter in the background I could that Tweet was very busy that day. Nonetheless, I was very glad that she took the time out of her very busy schedule to speak with me the week her sophmore album dropped. Stay tuned for my review!

Tweet's album It's Me Again is in stores now!

It's been three years since the first album. What was the long wait between the albums about?
Tweet-I got caught in the merge between Elektra and Atlantic. You know they merged together. All of that spiraled and smoked. I had to sit back until it cleared but it was a good thing.

What did you do during your time off?
Tweet--In the studio all the time and also spending a lot of time with my daughter because I knew when it did come out I wouldn't have a lot of time with her.

With the album just coming out have you been doing a lot of promotion and performances.
Tweet-Promotion. I have been on promotion since January. I haven't even been home maybe one day. I have been overseas and everything and I'm going back.

Your voice sounds different than like it does on TV like it might be strained from talking all the time.
Tweet- Right! I have been talking all day everyday. This is the work voice.

I noticed you did some producing on the new album. Was this your first time doing production?
Tweet-No. Actually, I produced more on the last album. I just laid back a little bit.

You are a song writer also. Do you write songs for other artists?
Tweet-Yeah. I've written for Whitney Houston, Monica, Mya, Blaque, Karen Clark. That's not it, but I can't remember.

A lot of artists stay in the tabloids and the gossip columns. How do you manage to stay out of the gossip.
Tweet- You know what? I'm too old for all of that. It's not like I stay out there. There is nothing you can, I'm into to get into anything like that. I have a daughter so I'm doing the grown woman thing.

Your daughter appears on the album. Does s

he want to be a recording artist also?
Tweet- She does but she is around me and watches me work and she says "Mommy, I love you but I could never do what you do because it's hard work."

You have always been very beautiful, but now you seem very glamorous. What did you do to achieve this new look.
Tweet- It's just life in general. I'm three years older now. It's about being classy. It's just simple.

Were you a judge on Missy's show Road To Stardom?
Tweet--No, I wasn't.

Shows like Road To Stardom and Making The Band expose new artists to the industry. When you were a new artist did you have a kind of new artist boot camp?
Tweet- Well yes. Devante and Jodeci had a lot of groups with Missy and Tim and my group, so I feel like Da Bassment crew was my new artist boot camp. So going through that for six years was my boot camp.

What are your long term goals as an artist?
Tweet-As an artist, to continue to put out music, but to put out timeless music that you can put in ten years from now and enjoy it.

What are your favorite songs on the album?
Tweet-That's kinda hard, that's like asking a mother to choose her favorite child but a special one is the one with my daughter and I.

Your song "Call Me" was featured on a Verizon commercial. Was that just an amazing thing for you?

Tweet- Definitely.

Do you have any guest artists on the album? I head the "Turn Da Lights Off" remix with 50 Cent, but I haven't heard the entire album, I'm still waiting for my review copy.
Tweet- The only other artists featured besides Missy and my daughter is Rell from Roc-A-Fella.

After you got your deal were you ever pressured to change or were you always given the freedom to be yourself?
Tweet-I was so fortunate to be able to be myself. From the beginning. Missy just put me in the studio and said "do you," that's something that a lot of artists don't get the opportunity to get.
