Interview with Pete Wanat producer of
the video game Scarface-The World Is Yours
Scarface-The World Is Yours has been compared to the Rockstar
Games titles Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. What are your
feelings about the comparisons to the Rock Star titles?
Pete Wanat-I love them
- I love those games with the exception of Vice City.
I thought the other two were two of the greatest games
ever made. I think the guys who put the GTA:3 and GTA:SA
are spot on -- they move the industry forward - I would
really love to see them take that same Keen eye and add
a license on top of it.
How important was choosing the songs for the soundtrack?
Pete Wanat-I think
music in general is important to a game and often times
it goes overlooked or is only used for marketing purposes.
That never sits well, Scarface the World is Yours is very
different -- there is no all Hip-Hop sound track and that's
important, since early on it was a rumor. I love the diversified
sound track that Rob Bridget and Steve Goldman pout together
- it's huge in helping us not sound like every other game
out there. We have a unique feel and the music only exemplifies
that fact.
Were there any songs that you wanted to use but couldn't
get a clearance for?
Pete Wanat-There where
a ton of songs we wanted to use but we couldn't get the
rights. Most of this is that the music industry just has
no clue about games and think because we are also on a
disc format, that people are buying the game for the music.
Because of that. they think they can charge us more because
it's on a CD. A lot of what we do is educating the agents
who control the rights and after a bit of time - they
either get it or we don't use their artist.
What are the main differences between the X-Box/PS2 title
and the PSP version of the game?
Pete Wanat-The biggest
difference between the PS2 and Xbox version are graphics
and controls - not a lot has been change from one to another
-we made use of the Xbox tech features and have it running
on 720 in HD. The PSP is a totally different game - somewhere
between Drug Wars and Risk.
As a gamer one of my main complaints with some of
the Vivendi Games is the controlling mechanisms. When
designing this game did you all dedicate a lot of time
tweaking character movement and control?
Pete Wanat-Well I
think I would need to know what games by VG you had issues
with, but we spent almost a year going back over every
mechanic on the game to make it feel great. I would love
to know what you think - I think we have the best targeting
and driving of any open world game to date.
How long was the process of bringing the game to life
from concept to conception?
Pete Wanat-From Concept
phase - almost 4 years.
How has the game been received by those who were fortunate
enough to give it a test drive?
Pete Wanat-The feedback
has been overwhelmingly positive - and we are all very
proud of the game. Radical -- the game's developer - was
amazing and they deserve the lion's share of credit to
for that game.
Have any celebrity voice's been announced regarding
the title?
Pete Wanat-We have
more than 50 celebrity voice actors who appear in the
game and they are a diverse group, representing talent
from television, music, movies, sports and more. People
like Cheech Marin, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tommy Lee and Jillian
Barberie all in the same game. It's really astounding.
If the title proves to be successful, could a sequel
be in the future?
Pete Wanat-I hope
so - I didn't work this long to not follow it up with
something.
Will game players find a lot of side missions and
hidden features in the game?
Pete Wanat-There are
tons of side missions - and to those players who finish
the game 100% of the way thru
. There is an extra
special treat for them.
