Oh darn. I have missed play group again. That's
about 12 weeks in a row now. I love the gals in the play
group, it's just when Monday morning rolls around it's
the start of the work week for me. Play group slips my
mind until about Thursday morning. Then I remember, "Drats,
I missed play group again." Well, my two year old
hardly noticed, he is happy having his military dad around
during the day so I think he will forgive me for missing
play group three months in a row.
My days and weeks are hectic to say the least. I have
a really cool job-yes it's a job. Just because I am working
at home with Judge Mathis or Divorce Court playing
on the television in the background doesn't mean it's
not a job. My working friends call me from time to time
during the day when they are playing hooky from work.
Sometimes I chit chat, but they are often met with a phrase
I share with callers throughout the day, "I'm working."
The most frequent of callers will remember hearing this
phrase over and over again. I don't mind the calls, sometimes
I need the distraction, but very few realize just how
intense my work schedule is.
What do I do? I hardly remember when people ask me that
question. I am an entertainment journalist. I am a author.
I also operate several very popular web sites like this
one thabiz.com
and imissthe80s.com.
Oh yeah, I forgot, I am also a publisher.
Oh yeah, and a web
designer. I must not forget I act as my own publicist.
I'm sure I have left something off. Oh yeah, I like to
write-but rarely get a chance.
The morning usually begins with my husband or I taking
my oldest off to school. Pre-school is a wonderful place.
If he wasn't in school all day I am quite sure I would
not get anything done at all.
There was a time I did everything, everyday. It was bananas.
So I had to make some kind of schedule for myself. I start
work at 9 A.M. and work until 4:30 in the afternoon. Of
course, I can take breaks whenever I want to, but I rarely
do. You know why? Because I really enjoy what I do for
the most part.
Monday is a nightmare day for me. Not nightmare
bad, just a day of mass confusion. I spend the first two
hours of the day just sitting around planning out my day
or week. I open the e-mail and try to make a mental map
of what to do first. Then I sit down and get to work.
I answer e-mail messages. Then I get my packages ready
to mail. I view purchase orders and try to collect money
from stores that haven't paid for books. I attempt to
get new stores to order books. I talk with various publicists
at labels and film/video companies about upcoming promotions
and strike deals for discrete advertising, reviews and
other stuff for the various web sites I operate or write
for.
Tuesdays & Thursdays are the days that I do
phone interviews with celebrities, mostly hip-hop and
R&B artists, but lately I have done a few authors
and reality TV stars. I also review products that were
sent to me by various labels or film studios for review.
These are also days that I work on other freelance writing
projects. I write for the Teen,
Rapmusic, and 1980s
section at Bellaonline.com. Tuesdays and Thursdays
are also big promotion days. I network with other media
professionals regarding promoting my projects or cross
promoting our joint projects. I send out press releases,
mail invitations to upcoming author events and print out
materials for my press kit. I also make attempts to make
updates to my various web sites. It doesn't always happen
but I try to upload new reviews and news daily. I also
do radio on Tuedays and Thursdays. Most of the time I
do phoner's with various stations nationwide discussing
entertainment news or the 80's but recently I actually
got to be live in the studio for an hour and a half at
a local station. Coolness.
Wednesday, I usually clean my house real good.
Keep in mind, I still have to do daily chores like clean,
cook dinner, tend to the children, wash clothes and so
forth. Attempt to develop lesson plans and curriculum
to coincide with my book The
Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students.
Even on Wednesday, I have packages to get ready to mail.
If I don't get the packages together everyday, it will
really be a nightmare. Not only am I mailing books people
have purchased, I am also mailing review copies and press
kits for various books I have written. I love writing
reviews for products so I am usually also doing a few
reviews on Wednesdays.
Friday. Like most working people, I really look
forward to Friday. I know that it is my last day of the
work week. I spend Friday wrapping things up. Posting
transcripts of the past weeks interviews, answering e-mail
messages I should have answered days before and just catching
up on things.
I try not to work on the weekends but I usually end up
printing off materials that will be sent off in press
kits or flyers or just stuff that needs to be printed
for the next week.
When 4:30 comes I am so happy that the weekend has arrived.
I look forward to renting movies from Blockbuster and
watching them with my husband. I am glad that I have two
days that I don't have to worry about e-mail, or mailing
review copies, or printing labels, or promoting or anything.
I play my Play Station 2 and have a really good weekend.
You also have to be very disciplined to work for yourself.
To me, playing PS2 is a treat, so on the weekend when
the work is done, I play PS2. For the record my favorite
games are any game in the Grand Theft Auto Series.
Oh
.when do I write. I write at nighttime. When
the mood strikes me, I'll write at night for a few hours.
I'm
always looking for more work! View my on-line resume at
