Interview with new J Records R&B duo Luke &
Q.
There hasn't really been a big R&B duo since KC and JoJo.
What made you all decide to be a duo rather than launching
separate solo careers?
Luke & Q-I just
feel that everything happens for a reason. I don't doubt
the man. I feel like God put us together for a reason.
I guess we ran with it. The opportunity came and we went
with it. Clive wanted a duo, me and Q have been together
since the 9th grade so we felt like it was only right.
Why not?
How did you all go about getting a record deal?
Luke & Q-Actually,
we went about getting a record deal just by doing everything
we could possibly do. Anything that you can be seen or
heard doing? We did it. Things around New Orleans. We
sang background for Tyrese. We sang background for Mario.
Meeting different people that way is kind of how we ended
up getting our deal.
What's life on the road like for a background singer?
Luke & Q-It can
be stressful. It really all depends on the artist to be
honest with you. You have to know that being that you
are a singer and you aspire to be a headline artist you
have to keep in your mind that it's not about you. You
have to know that if you wake up late you will get left.
They will catch that plane without you. You will be stuck
in China. It's tough you just have to stay on you're a
game and know that it is a job. It is fun. For us being
that we are signed now. Tyrese is like our big brother,
not like he is. I mean it was a great experience we learned
what to do and what not to do .
Do either of you rap?
Luke & Q-We both
rap you dig we come from New Orleans. Hip-hop was a great
influence on us but we are doing the R&B thing right now.
Are you all finished recording your album?
Luke & Q-Actually,
no. We are still working on more songs but we do have
a good bit of it finished. We worked with producers like
Mannie Fresh, Jazze Pha, the Underdogz, Tank, Tyrese,
Little Steve, Eric Dawkins, Tony Dixon, St. Nick, a bunch
of more people we will work with. We have been signed
for two years, year and a half we want to keep ourselves
fresh. Also be on the look out for some up-tempos with
Justin Timberlake.
Where are you all recording the album at?
Luke & Q-Everywhere.
Wherever we can go to record a song we will go.
Post-Hurricane Katrina will you all live in New Orleans
again?
Luke & Q-Yeah
no doubt about it that's home. I feel like that helped
make us be the young men that we are and someday when
we do have children I want that instilled in them.
If you all didn't pursue careers in music what type of
career do you think you would be doing?
Luke & Q-I haven't
fathomed that. For me and for Luke there is no other choice
than music. That is what we were put on this earth to
do. Since we were babies and came out of the womb. But
we are born hustlers so we would find a way.
So since you all were always singing what was it like
I high school were you all doing talent shows and stuff
like that?
Luke & Q-We did
talent shows, we did baby showers, bar mitzvahs', we did
card games, dice games, we were tele-you know people who
come to your door and sing happy birthday, telmarkets,
whatever those are , you know the people who come to your
door and sell you magazines that was us. We did anything
and everything to get heard and I guess that way God blessed
us to be in the position that we are in now. That's basically
how we met Tyrese.
Did you all ever consider going on a show like American
Idol?
Luke & Q-No. Nah,
not really to be honest with you. We put in our grind
the old fashion way. When Michael Jackson and the Jackson
Five were coming up there was no American Idol and things
like that there were just talent shows and being in the
right place at the right time. That's the way we went
about doing it.
How have the promo dates been so far?
Luke & Q-The fellas
been showing us love and the ladies been showing us love.
We've been blessed. People have just been great we have
just been received real well. We're supposed to be jumping
on tour with LL. That will be a good look.
