Lady Sovereign Interview

Lady Sovereign is already a success in the UK but now she is ready to bring her unique form of blended music to the U.S. With a cosign from from Mr. Shawn Carter (Jay-Z) himself, Lady Sov's Def Jam debut Public Warning drops later this year.

How long have you been making music and doing what you do?
Lady Sovereign-Six years now.

I listened to the music streams on your website and I was really impressed. It seems like there are so many musical styles represented in your music. How would you describe your music?

Lady Sovereign-My music is music. There you go. It's not really one style. It's not hip-hop, it's not garage but its sorta fused together in some sort of way but I don't like to classify myself as one or the other. I just make music and that's what it sound like to me anyway.

Who are some of the music artists who influenced you in your life?

Lady Sovereign-I don't know. I listen to a lot of hip-hop, UK garage, punk, everything so I can't really say, it's like a long bunch.

Is your next record going to be released in the U.S.?
Lady Sovereign-Yeah you will even get it before Europe.

What's the name of the album?
Lady Sovereign-Public Warning.

What can you tell me about the album?
Lady Sovereign-The album is a breath of fresh air. You won't get bored of it. I listen to it all the time , I love my own stuff. It's entertaining. There is a lot going on on there. I suppose people can relate to what I'm saying. It's kinda broad but I know a lot of people get into it.

I know you said your music is music but growing up did you have any other career aspirations or did you always want to do music?
Lady Sovereign-I wanted to play soccer. Football or soccer. That's what I like to do but from smoking and drinking I started running out of breath. So yeah music. I found music.

Another UK artist that a lot of people are feeling over here is Miss Dynamite. Have you all ever worked together or would you consider working together in the future?

Lady Sovereign-Its in the pipeline actually. We might be doing something. I would like to. She inspired me in a way to push forward. She was like the first UK female MC that I heard anyway.

I saw that you are coming to the US later this year for a few shows. Are you looking forward to coming over here?
Lady Sovereign-Yeah. I've been there quite a lot. I like doing shows out there because the crowds are a lot more receptive and a bit more excited rather than the UK where they kinda take you for granted. I love it out there. I have The Streets tour coming up. I'm touring with The Streets as special guest so I have a ton of dates.

Do you ever get nervous before your live show?

Lady Sovereign-Only if it ain't as many people there that I expected. I like to have a full hefty big crowd I don't like nothing less than that. It gets scary when there is hardly anyone there not that it happens.

What do you do in your free time when you aren't working on your music?

Lady Sovereign-Stuff. I don't know.

Do you like to watch movies?
Lady Sovereign-I have a DVD collection. I just like to go and see people. See my friends, go out, get drunk and other stuff. Yeah, try to do…I don't know.

What do you do to pass the time on those long transatlantic flights?
Lady Sovereign-I try to watch about two films. That takes up about 3 ½ hours. I kind of try to sleep. I hate it. There is nothing to do. It's not like you can get up and play football or something you have to just sit there. You look out the window there is nothing to look at. It's boring.

Do you ever have time to check out your website or MYSPACE profile?
Lady Sovereign-Yes. I'm always on MYSPACE. I run it myself. People say like "Awe she's probably so rich she can pay her own people to do this," I'm not rich and I don't pay anyone to do my MYSPACE. I do it myself.

Have you ever worked with Craig David or would you work with him?

Lady Sovereign-No. No offense.

You all have different music styles.
Lady Sovereign-He plays it a bit safe. I don't really want to get mixed up with that whole "la di da."

Do you have any featured artists on your album?

Lady Sovereign- No.

That's what I'm talking about you hold it down because it seems like now everyone is so formula with their music it's all "Who's on your album?"
Lady Sovereign-I don't want people to say like if it were someone like Eminem people would talk about him more than me.
