Jibbs single "Chang Hang
Low" is blowing up! Check out our interview from
this past summer!
Interview with new artist Jibbs. His current single "Chain
Hang Low" is getting heavy airplay.
Where did you come up with your name Jibbs from?
Jibbs- Actually I
had Jibbs when I was a baby my parents called me that.
Then when I got older I found it was a slang word for
a mouthpiece like "If you trippin' and you gon' get hit
in the Jibbs."
What was life like for you growing up in St. Louis?
Jibbs-It was crazy
I came up in the hood with a close family who supported
everything that we did. Competitive brothers and sisters
always competing in everything to see who is the best
at what. I mean we just did two things we boxed and did
music. I started off boxing and I got humbled to doing
music. It was kind of rough but the fact that we had a
close family, my brothers and sisters were my friends.
I used to live in that area not too far from there in
Carbondale, Illinois for 6 years.
Jibbs-Oh yeah, I got
a cousin out there.
Until Nelly and Jkwon there had never been a lot of
rappers that made it out of St. Louis so when Nelly started
blowing up did that inspire you more?
Jibbs-Actually, that
inspired me a lot more. For him to just be coming out
and being a new artist out of St. Louis and like doing
numbers like that everyone took to him and attached to
him like that it inspired me like "I can do this myself."
The single is crazy. Who's idea was it to put the little
nursery rhyme thing in the song?
Jibbs-Actually, that
was a song we did a long time ago with my dog Lil Mont
and actually I was the little kid on their singing that,
"Do your chain hang low," I was singing that. I always
thought that was a hit song. As of today I kept telling
my brother like "I need ya'll to remake that song," so
one day they remade that beat and it was so sick I couldn't
resist it and then I thought about putting my little sister
and brother on there so I put them on there, wrote some
new verses, wrote a new pre-hook, and kept the hook chain
hang low and that's where it is.
Jibbs-Less than a
year ago around August my lawyer Doug Davis and my brother
DJ Beats we were all shopping my deal around everywhere.
Everywhere we stopped through they wanted to get me. So
Interscope/Geffen happened to be the last record label
we stopped at and they loved it. They went crazy over
it and that ended up being the best record label. They
came with it. And I do mean the best thing. It's the best
record label to be on right now.
What was it like shooting your video?
Jibbs-That was like
the fun'est part of my career shooting my video. That
was crazy for me and then to see it I couldn't believe
that.
Are you surprised that it's taking off so fast?
Jibbs-Yes, I'm blessed
that it's taking off this fast but I have been doing this
all my life so that's a good thing.
What can you tell me about your album?
Jibbs-It's very versatile.
You won't go from one song to the next song and then the
song you just heard sound the same as the last one. It's
real versatile. I switched the style up that's why it's
called Jibbs featuring Jibbs, I changed my style up it's
me featuring myself on some of the songs so that's what
you can expect something totally different.
What are your long term career goals?
Jibbs-Do you plan
to get into movies and fashion? I plan to have a long
term career with movies everything the whole nine clothes,
clothing lines, endorsements, commercials, everything.
I'll take it all.
