Hello, how are
you doing today?
J-Kwon-Hey baby.
How long have you had your deal
J-Kwon-Probably like 4 months, 5 months. Things have
been going really fast.
Was Tipsy always intended to be your first single?
J-Kwon-No, but when I did it I knew it was gonna
be the single, we almost didnt even record "Tipsy,"
but once I heard it I knew it was going to be a hit.
Who's idea was it to put the "Teen drinking is very
bad " skit at the beginning of the song?
J-Kwon-Actually me and the Track Boyz came up
with that, it was a team effort. I always talk about fake
ID's. I wanted to do something that would make it seem like
im a bad teen.
Did you ever imagine that your first single would go top
5 on the Billboard chart?
J-Kwon-Uhmmm, I mean, that is what every entertainers
goal is, it just hit me off guard, Im so young, Im 17 it
just hit me so fast, like I didnt get to experience what
a lot of other rappers do. I've been through a lot, but
not as far as the music industry is concerned. Like some
rappers will put out 2 or 3 singles before they have a hit
and it happened for me on my first single. I love it Im
blessed.
What was it like shooting your first video?
J-Kwon-On the real, I'm like kind of unpatient,
but it was real good, I was grateful. I'm a grateful dude.
I was thanking Jesus and I turn on the TV, it hit MTV before
BET, that was crazy for me. I was like oh my gosh it's about
to get ridiculous. I saw all the the scenes and it was looking
good. I was on TV looking good. I like to look good.
How are you dealing with being an instant celeb
J-Kwon-I jump out the car and girls start screaming
in my ears, my ears hurt. You wanna hug them, it feels nice
though I like attention. Any kid likes atention. I'm a kid
and I like attention.
(Don't get confused, J-Kwon actually reversed the flow of
the interview and asked me a few questions)
J-Kwon-Are you going to get my album
when it comes out?
DW at thabiz Of
course, I hear that St. Louis accent now.
J-Kwon-What do you know about St.
Louis, you don't know anything about St. Louis.
DW at thabiz Yes, I do,
I went to school in Southern Illinois.
J-Kwon-What do you know about St.
Louis?
J-Kwon-I guess you are right, the closest I came
to St. Louis was a trip to East. St. Louis to get my hair
done.
Do you have any guest artists on the album?
J-Kwon-Yeah, Im glad you asked, I got up Nelly,
Muphee Lee, Ali, JD. They are all rapping, it's real hood
and pop at the same time. Track Boyz did 90% of the of the
beats and JD did a beat. Me and Chingy and Murphee Lee are
on the Tipsy re-mix.
How is it working with Jermaine Dupri?
It's love, he the best marketing man in the world. He
only did one track on the album.
What is the next single?
J-Kwon-Cant tell you, uh oh.
With so many other St. Louis rappers out did you feel
more pressure to succeed?
J-Kwon-I feel no pressure
from them anyone.
Is it hard getting into the routine of constant promotion?
J-Kwon-Constant promotion,
its easy. Once you latch on. Everyone else isn't going
to feel like getting up at 7 in the morning and doing
phone interviews. No other young person is out there doing
it like that. I'm grindin'.
Do you have any touring plans?
J-Kwon-No. Wherever
the crowd takes me. If the song blows up in Egypt, I'll
be over there with the thing on my head talking about,
"Everybody in Egypt getting Tipsy."
Your bio says that you left home at a young age, are
you on good terms with your family now?
J-Kwon-Real good terms.
If you album goes platinum what is the first thing
you are going to do?
J-Kwon-First thing......
I'll run through the mall naked.
I know a young lady named Rasheeda.
She is 15 years old and she wanted me to tell you she
is your biggest fan. She wanted me to ask you if you had
any brothers?
J-Kwon-Brother, yes I have a brother. Tell
baby girl I said hi and I would give her a hug if I saw
her.
