Interview with Danity Kane. You've seen them on MTV's
Making The Band 3 now check out the exclusive interview!
Where are you all from?
Aundrea-I'm from California
like 40 minutes outside of L.A.
Dawn- I'm from New
Orleans.
Shannon-I'm from Oregon.
Aubrey-I'm from San
Francisco and D. Woods she's from Massachusetts by way
of Atlanta. She ran out for a second but she'll be right
back.
The episodes that are airing now when were those episodes
taped?
Aubrey-We started
taping those episodes at the end of March through May.
Since then a couple of weeks at a time we did some more
shows but that was the big chunk of them.
Do you all ever watch the episodes that air now?
Dawn- We watch them
but we try not to watch them all the time. We get episodes
and they will give us a DVD to watch them before the show
airs but then after that we don't go back to it because
we lived it we know the grunt of it. We don't have cable
any ways. We lived that part and now we are going forward.
From what you all have seen do you think the editing is
fairly accurate?
Dawn- We're really
happy with it but of course by it being a show it's very
one dimensional. You can only get so much in 30 minutes.
Of course it's not all of us like all of the sides of
who we are and as women we have many sides so it's not
going to show every side of us. But what you see on the
show is a glimpse of who we really are. We are happy that
we were able to have that vessel so we can have great
album sales and fans. But of course its not all of us
because we have so much more to give to people. Aubrey-It's
the entertaining attributes of all of us.
Someone wanted me to ask you this. I didn't get to
see every episode of the show but someone asked me to
ask, "Will the animation of the character Danity Kane
appear in your album cover art or anywhere?" Because the
name of the group is based on a drawing….
Shannon-It's based
on a drawing that Dawn did. We're working on our website
right now so we're hoping we can get Danity Kane's face
on our website.
Are you all prepared to win over fans who didn't
watch the show?
Aubrey-Yes.
Dawn-Our main
goal is to capture that audience because now the transition
is going from us being a television show to being women
who trying to sell an album and be artists so we definitely
want to contact those people who haven't seen the show
as a matter of a fact we want the people to see us artists
now we are no longer TV personalities we are now legit
artists.
So does that mean you all won't be on future season of
Making The Band?
Danity Kane-No.
I reviewed your album sampler and I think you all can
sing. But I do remember the episode when you all went
to the radio station and some people got dissed. Is it
hurtful when people say you all can't sing or are you
able to brush it off now?
Shannon-Well it's
not true. You have to have thick skin in this business
because people are going to have their own opinions that's
just a lesson Diddy has been teaching us through this
whole process. We are so thankful that we reached that
obstacle early in our career so you know you learn how
to brush it off. You are going to have critics no matter
who you are or what you've done. People don't always love
Prince, people don't always love Madonna and you know
it doesn't matter and that's part of being successful
learning how to take the criticism and take the positive
and not let it control you as an artist.
D. Woods-We
do understand that the only reference they have to our
singing or anything involved in people singing around
us has been on this show and the show doesn't always necessarily
highlight those moments when you are doing the best because
they are trying to make ratings, but what makes it interesting
if people are always doing good so they have to make drama
or they saw the previous season when people were getting
cut for sounding bad so they just automatically associate
all of us with that same category with not being able
to sing so we have to understand that and brush it off
because they don't know but as soon as the music comes
out because like you said when you heard it you liked
us and thought we could sing so we're hoping we can change
a lot of people's mind once the music comes out.
What have you all found to be the hardest part about being
an artist? You all had to be new artists under different
circumstances you had camera's following you but in addition
to that what's the hardest part you found about being
an artist?
D. Woods-We
feel like everyday is an obstacle because in this industry
everything is always go, go, go, go, go. It definitely
is a hardcore industry and Diddy is basically introducing
us to this industry so we have tough skin to get through
it. I think the hardest thing for us is making that transition.
We want people to see us as artists and not see us as
I said before television personalities. We want to strive
to be the greatest group and be here for a long time.
We want longevity. So that's really important to us and
making that transition is not necessarily the hardest
thing but it's the most important thing for us right now.
It's funny you mentioned longevity because that leads
into my next question. Some previous Bad Boy groups like
Dream and Da Band didn't make it past one album so are
you all already looking toward the next album and the
future?
D. Woods-Yes
that's our work ethic. We are always going to look toward
the future. We have a different work ethic and it's really
on a very professional level so we aren't just looking
at the next album we are looking at the next four albums,
the next five concerts, and what we are going to do visually.
We are looking to be together for a very long time and
we don't look to other artists even though we respect
everyone in this industry. We don't look to them for our
progress, we look to ourselves and God. We are really
conscious about our future and we hope people are ready
for us and look forward to seeing plenty of us.
So are you all looking forward to the album coming out?
Danity Kane--Yeah
Does anyone have any solo plans or is everyone concentrating
on the band right now?
Aubrey--Right
now our only concern is the group.
Diddy seems like he can be intimidating but he also seems
like he can be a fun guy. What's it like working with
Diddy?
Dawn-It's
just like that. Sometimes he's real laid back and he's
real silly. He's about the business he wants perfection.
He doesn't let us get out the studio until we have made
it a bonafied hit and then he will say "Let's hit the
club now," we are like "What?" and he is like "I command
you to have fun, we're having fun, I command you to have
fun right now." You have to get used to it. It's a little
bit of both worlds. You have to know when he's in play
mode and when he's in serious mode.
So up until August are you all doing any touring?
AubreyYeah we
have a promotional tour with Nordstrom's around September
and October so tell your audience to check in with their
local Nordstrom's. Then we will probably have a summer
tour coming up after that, late summer/fall.
How does your family feel about you all participating
on the show? Are they excited?
Aundrea-I think that
all of our families are very excited for us and I don't
think any of us could do this without them. We all come
from very close families. They're really excited and we
just shot our finale and a few of our parents were able
to come down and see us. They are so happy they all had
their signs and they are like "We love you guys." They
are so supportive.
